A vision for personalised breast cancer screening.
Melbourne Comprehensive Breast Care was founded by Dr Saam Tourani, Consultant Breast and Endocrine Surgeon, with a simple but powerful vision:
to move breast cancer screening away from a one-size-fits-all model and toward truly personalised care.
For decades, breast screening has largely relied on age alone to guide when and how women are screened. While this approach has saved lives, it does not reflect what we now know — that breast cancer risk varies widely between individuals based on family history, genetics, breast density, hormonal factors, and personal medical history.
Dr Tourani founded MCBC to help women access the right test, at the right time, for their individual level of risk.
Why personalised screening matters?
Some women may benefit from earlier or more intensive screening, including breast MRI or tailored surveillance programs. Others may safely avoid unnecessary tests, radiation exposure, anxiety, and false alarms.

Grounded in research and clinical experience
Dr Tourani’s vision for MCBC is firmly grounded in both clinical practice and research. He is a co-author of one of the largest Australian studies on familial breast cancer screening, conducted in collaboration with Professor Ian Bennett, examining outcomes and screening strategies in women with inherited risk. This work has contributed to a deeper understanding of how tailored screening can improve detection while minimising harm.
Alongside this research, rapid advances in breast imaging technology — including digital mammography, tomosynthesis, contrast-enhanced imaging, and MRI — now allow screening to be better matched to individual risk profiles than ever before.
MCBC brings these advances together in a practical, patient-focused way.
Dr Saam Tourani is a Melbourne-based Consultant Breast and Endocrine Surgeon with extensive experience in breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, and risk assessment. He is actively involved in clinical research, education, and innovation in breast care.
